GVM PRO-SD300B 300W Bi-Color Monolight Review

GVM PRO-SD300B 300W Bi-Color Monolight with Softbox

Introduction

Over the last few months, I have had the opportunity to test out the GVM PRO-SD300B 300W Bi-Color Monolight with the GVM 24” Quick Release Softbox in my studio and remotely at a few in-home sessions and corporate shoots. It is a fantastic light that comes with a lot of amazing features as you would expect out of GVM. The light comes in at $389.00 on Amazon and is worth every penny. It is one of the best studio lights I have ever tested. In this article, I want to go through all the major features as well as offer my own thoughts on the light.

Size / physical attributes

The GVM PRO-SD300B is made of mostly aluminum alloy with a built-in bowens mount to attach light modifiers to. It weighs in at 5 lbs which is on the heavier side for lighting and requires a good sturdy stand; especially with a soft box attached. The knobs and controls on the back are intuitive and easy to use which is very nice. The light is also easily adjustable in angle and comes with a nice handle on the back to help angle the light when a light modifier is attached.

The light is powered by a regular wall outlet but has the ability to also be powered by a power bank which is amazing for on-the-go or more remote applications

Brightness

As far as brightness goes, 300 watts is absolutely amazing. It can light up a studio or large room on its own like it is daylight. It can overpower the sun in well lit rooms during the daytime which is very nice. While it is incredibly bright at its max output, it does come with a dimmer dial which allows it to be adjusted from 1% to 100% to match the desired output.

Color Temperature

The color temperature of the light can be manually adjusted from 2700 to 6800K and comes with built-in color modes (tungsten, HMI 5600, HMI 6000, studio lamps, sodium lamp, halogen, arc lamp, candle, sunset / sunrise, daylight, overcast sky, CFL cool white) for easy adjustment. It is a very nice feature.

Lighting Effects

The GVM PRO-SD300B also comes with built in lighting effects that can give a nice touch when capturing video and can even mimic things like lightning, CCT cycle, candle, bad bulb, TV, paparazzi, explosion, breathing light, strobe, flame, fireworks, and welding. Each effect can be individually adjusted also in its magnitude and frequency. Though I typically use these lights at a set temperature and brightness, this feature may be useful to some other video makers.

Mobile App control

One of the best features of this light is that it can be adjusted using the GVM mobile app on IOS or Android. This allows for fine tuning from a distance and can also allow you to control multiple lights. It is an incredibly useful feature.

Carrying case / Inclusions

The light comes with a very nice carrying case that fits the light, cables, and standard cover. It is well constructed and has carrying handles; a nice touch.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a great video light or light to use in your studio; the The GVM PRO-SD300B is a fantastic option. The ability to light a room no matter the size and yet be able to refine that light as much as needed is invaluable. It truly comes with all the bells and whistles and is everything I could want in a studio light and then some.
